THE HISTORY OF THE HOUSTON MARINE MOMS
It all began in 2002……with two Moms whose sons had graduated from Klein ISD and had entered the United States Marine Corps. Lonely, missing their boys, needing a connection from another Mom who “got it”, and not receiving the satisfaction they longed for from the National group, the call was put out on the national board, “Looking for Moms in the Houston area”. That was THE beginning of the Houston Marine Moms Organization as Kay and Jay found each other, just two miles down the road in Spring. It didn’t take long for 6 more members to be added from different walks of life and lifetime experiences, but all with one common denominator: sons in the United States Marines and looking for that support system.
In January 2003, the initial group met for the first time at Starbucks at the corner of Louetta and Kuykendahl in Spring, Texas. They grew by leaps and bounds….supported each other through boot, MCT/SOI, MOS, permanent duty stations from D.C. to Japan, and of course, “the War”. They cried together, laughed together and, in true female fashion, even argued together. Just like our sons are brothers, so too, they were sisters.
As their Marines safely returned home and ventured on to their new lives, the Board of the Houston Marine Moms had seen the growth in the Organization and the community support received. In the 4th Quarter of 2013, the opportunity was offered to and accepted by Tina Gorcie, a very active Marine MoM since 2010, to take on the leadership of the Organization. With much respect of the former co-founders and Board, a new Board was formed and the Organization continued on with rapid growth. They quickly applied for and were granted 501c3 status as a Non-Profit organization. The Organization’s activity and recognition in and around the Houston area was becoming synonymous with the word Marine. Their care packages made a huge impact on the deployed, and their Operation Sock It To ‘Em collection drives were and continue to be major successes to ensure no Marine (or deployed military member) goes without socks or suffers from trench foot. The Organization supports all branches of the Military, as well as now has member Moms from all branches.
To support our growth, in January 2016, 4 Area Coordinators were incorporated as “arms of the Board” to aid in communications to our Members around the Houston Area and to better accommodate the needs of local “get togethers”, local events, etc.
The Houston Marine Moms continue the philosophy and dreams of our co-founders to “support each other, whether it be Mom, family or military member, from Poolee status, to Recruit, to Marine, to Veteran. Armed with years of combined experience, and thru various avenues of knowledge, at our fingertips, we continue to support our extended family because, after all “WE GET IT”.
Many faces, one mission.
We are a diverse group of MoMs– book keepers, marketers, teachers, public servants, business owners – united by our common bond of being mothers of United States Marines.
