It's Just a Piece of Cloth

Or is it? The 91st Psalm Bandana. I often tell people it's just a piece of cloth but the truth is it's so much more. I met a remarkable Army mom several years ago, Judith Cook--who when faced with her son Nick's deployment and the 150 men that were under him. I was asked to start sewing comfort quilts. Because of this unit's job in Iraq, transportation, the Army was expecting a 50% casualty rate, 75 soldiers wounded or dead. Instead, Judith searched on the internet and found these 91st Psalm bandanas.

There are many stories throughout the years of Marines and soldiers praying the 91st Psalm and God protecting these men and women in the heat of battle. So Judith bought 150 bandanas and delivered them to the 15th Transportation Unit of Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. As she presented these bandanas to the soldiers, she asked them to pray this Psalm every day before their mission. Throughout the next year, Nick relayed story after story of God protecting his unit. After one particularly unnerving attack on his men, Nick wrote his mom: If you are praying for us, it must be working. That's the only explanation of how no one has been seriously injured yet. One year later, Nick and all 150 of his soldiers returned home, not one soldier was seriously injured, not one soldier was killed.

Since 2005 the Houston Marine Moms have adopted the 91st Psalm Bandanas as one of their major programs. We've sent over 5,000 of the Psalm 91 bandanas to Iraq. We work with churches to adopt a Marine or soldier. They pray over the bandana and we send them to Iraq. We work with Chaplains of whole battalions to pass these out.

I personally adopted an Army Special Forces unit with 12 bandanas. Once this Special Forces soldier got to Iraq, he asked if we could send more bandanas. He said even the Jewish guys and an atheist wanted one. We have stories of how when one Marine left his bandana behind, the whole squad gathered and did a Search and Rescue and went back and got this Marine's bandana.

It's just a piece of cloth--but when my Marine was deployed, I carried my 91st Psalm bandana with me everywhere I went. Without warning a panic feeling would come over me and I would pull out the bandana and just rub it. This 'piece of cloth' reminds me of God's promise of protection and love. "For He shall give His angels charge over me, to keep me in all my ways." Psalm 91:11

And in the heat of battle we've heard the Marines and soldiers rub the cloth as well and are comforted knowing that there are people back home praying for them.

Whether or not you have a son or daughter deploying soon, consider going to your friends or Bible study class, maybe your Sunday School class, ask them if they would like to adopt a squad, platoon or battalion. We ask for a $5.00 donation for each bandana. The key is to get a group to regularly pray this Psalm for our troops.

Let's pray each and every one of them home. If you would like more information on this program, please feel free to contact me via email at: grits1971@yahoo.com

    Dear Marine Moms:

Thanks so much for the bandanas!

I can't go into detail, but we had a bad morning recently and when I got to the office they were waiting on me -- it was like God's spirit just washed over me.

One day I walked down to the medical clinic and gave one to each of the staff -- they really needed them.

We celebrated the birthday of the Marine Corps on 10 Nov and after the ceremony I went around and handed the Marine digital bandanas out -- you would have thought it was money!

Great response from all the Marines, Corporals through Colonels.

Some of the other folks there (not Marines) asked for one and I told them I would give them a DCU version if they came to see me. Some of them came back for a bandana and then even came to church that night.

I have mine in my pocket always and I can see how moved the people are when they receive one. I'm especially touched by the prayer cards attached by the children. I tell people that they can't do better than having a 3rd grader praying for you.

Thanks again for what you are doing -- I will keep doing my part and getting them into people's hands.

    Grace and Peace,
    Chaplain Wade
